all the difference in the world

An
old man was going for a walk on the beach, when he noticed a little boy
feeding a thin, shaggy looking dog with bits of bread.

He went up to the boy and asked him why he was sharing his bread with the dogs.

The little boy answered, “Because they have nothing. No home, no family, and if I don’t feed them they will die.”

“But there are homeless dogs everywhere,” the old man replied. “So your efforts don’t really make a difference”

The little boy looked at the dog and stroked him. “But for him, for this little dog, it makes all the difference in the world.”

MECHANICAL TIME

There are no seconds, no minutes, no hours or days of the week. There are no months of the year, no decades. it is not 2018. It is not 5778. It is not 4716. Day breaks, the sun rises, the sun sets then there is the night. The seasons do not fall into convenient groups. Natures time is not mechanical. Mechanical time is an illusion.

“If victory over nature has been achieved in this age, then thenature over which modern man reigns is a very different nature from that in which man lived before the science revolution. Indeed, the trick that man turned and that enabled the rise of modern science was nothing less than the transformation of nature and of man’s perception of reality. The paramount change that took place in the mental life of man, beginning during roughly the 14th Century, was in man’s perception of time and consequently of space.”

Weizenbaum

“The mechanical clock dates from the 14th Century… The machine that mechanized time did more than regulate the activities of the day: it synchronized human reactions, not with the rising and setting sun but with the indicated movements of the clock’s hands: so it brought exact measurement and temporal control into every activity, by setting an independent standard whereby the whole day could be laid out and subdivided.

“The measurement of space and time became an integral part of the system of control that Western man spread over the planet. Karl Marx was one of the first to understand the place of the clock as the archetypal model for all later machines: in a letter to Friedrich Engels in 1863 he observed that ‘the clock is the first automatic machine applied to practical purposes; the whole theory of production and regular motion was developed through it’.”

Lake of Mummies

Lake Natron has accrued some amount of notoriety for its purported ability to turn any living creature that comes into contact with it a “living fossil.” This effect, while being somewhat overplayed in the media, has some basis in fact. It is not an instantaneous effect, but rather a gradual process. Animals that die here have the tendency to become petrified statues over time, a rare preservation phenomenon caused by the unique chemical makeup of the lake, which encrusts the carcasses with layers of salt, sodium carbonates, and sodium bicarbonates. The carcasses take on a chalky, stony appearance in a process somewhat similar to that undergone by Egyptian mummies.

The Man Who Saved The Buffalo

James “Scotty” Philip (30 April 1858 – 23 July 1911) was a South Dakota rancher, remembered as the “Man who saved the Buffalo” due to his role in helping to preserve the American Bison from extinction.

While he was building his cattle herd, Scotty Philip met Pete Dupree, whose son Fred had rescued 5 bison calves from an 1881 buffalo hunt along the Grand River. After Dupree’s death, Philip decided to preserve the species from extinction, and in 1899 he purchased Dupree’s herd, which now numbered 74 head, from Dupree’s brother-in-law, Dug Carlin.

Philip prepared a special pasture for the bison along the western side of the Missouri River north of Fort Pierre, and drove the herd there in 1901.

Scotty Philip died suddenly on July 23, 1911: by that time the herd had grown to approximately a thousand head. He was buried on a family cemetery near his buffalo pasture. As the funeral procession passed, some of the bison came down out of the hills. Newspapers of the time suggested the bison were “showing their respect to the man who had saved them”.
