Death Talks – A short story

A
man was on a journey when he saw a shortcut down a dark alley. Dark
alleys were nothing new to this man, as he has travelled through many of
them over the course of his journey.
Neither were shadows, as he has
even faced his own, but there was something odd about this one because
it seemed to move as he looked at it and it wasn’t his.
He paused, sensing something.
“Who’s there?”, he asked the darkness.
The darkness chose not to respond.
“You might as well show yourself, i can feel you here.”, he said to the silence.
“You
have become much more aware my friend…” came a whisper from the
silence. “There was a time when you were oblivious to me looking over
your shoulder.”, it continued.
“There was a time when i was oblivious to a great many things around me…now is not that time.” The man replied.
“As we both see…long has this meeting been coming.” said the whisper on the breeze blowing by him.
“Aaaah…so is it my time then?” The man whispered back.
“Yes it is…so no, it is not…not yet.”, was the message brought back by the breeze.
The man paused again while he listened to this.
“Before
you were born, GOD knew you and called you by name…You answered that
call and followed Christ until you found yourself anointed before ‘The
Mighty One’ and came back with a message…completing ‘The Sign of
Jonah’.”
The messages carried on the breeze continued;
“The
greatest of evils have always avoided you because of the light within.
Those whom have crossed your path in the past have been defeated, when
you turned the other cheek and did not strike them down to make them
stop…each one, making you stronger.”
“The ‘Art of the Warrior’ and ‘Art of Shen Ku’ have served you well.”,  the whisper went on.
“But now…”, the whisper paused and the wind changed direction.
“Now,
you are so aware, your will affects their reality…”, the whisper said
anew. “And they fear their time is ending…as it is.”
“Now, they are feeling desperate, and when you turn the other cheek they may not stop…”
Again
the whisper paused, as the wind increased in intensity and the Shadow
grew, bringing forth words with it. “Then, shall I be forced to
act…Only the survivors that are wise, shall learn their failed
lesson.”
“But i am not in danger now…why reveal yourself?” the man
asked, his hand holding his hat to his head, beard and cowl blowing
freely.
The wind calmed again and the words again became a whisper as
Death drew closer; “It seems senseless to hide now that your senses can
detect me normally…normally i remain undetected until their time.”
Then the man glimpsed for a moment, a tiny glimmer from under a shrouded hood within the shadows.
“Though this is not the first time for you is it?” came the whisper from within.
“No.”
said the man thinking back. “No, i remember a few times in my life,
even as a child, when i thought i was going to die and seeing you say;
“Not this time.”, but it was hazy to begin with, and then i’d forget
about it because i didn’t understand why.”
The glimmer passed away as the shadows shifted, but the whisper remained.
“Because
of your covenant…None shall end your time before it’s time…that’s
not their call to make.” Now Death seemed to engulf him and reform over
his other side. “Those that try too hard to make that call, shall find I
come for the one calling instead.”
The man stood in silence as Death continued talking.
“Because
of your covenant…If you fail to turn the other cheek and strike them
down before it’s time…You will no longer be able to bide a moment for
the rest. You must then use the Keys of Death and the Gates of Hell
Christ gave you to complete the last half of your journey…till the
‘End of Days’ and you take your seat as Judge…for it shall be the
least that serves as the most to separate the sheep from the goats.”
The man’s head dropped. “Can you tell whether i win their hearts and convince them to stop before it’s too late?”
“No.” Death stated, as a matter of fact.
“Free Will keeps the options open. People have until their last breath
to save themselves, but most still wait until their next one to
start…though it may not be coming.”
The wind died down, but the whisper did not.
“The
longer you walk, the greater your chances…But the further you are
from them, the less they understand you. The more you seek to help them,
the more they seek to kill you…It is a fine balance indeed, not an
easy journey.”
“No…but one worth walking.” The man said, as his
head raised up again to look Death in the eyes. “The further they are
from me when they do understand, only brings them closer. Then the ones
still further away can begin to see the light…and every one i can get
to go through the doors i stand before is a victory…because i am, the
last.”
Here, the man paused again, as a tear rolled from his eye
carrying the weight of his next words. “Though i will weep for any who
did not listen, they will also be tears of joy for the ones who did.”

Zen – Movie about Dogen

Banmei Takahashi’s “Zen”

based on the life of Japanese Zen Master Dogen
(19 January 1200 – 22 September 1253).

道元禅師
Dōgen Zenji (also Dōgen Kigen 道元希玄, or Eihei Dōgen 永平道元, or Koso Joyo Daishi) (19 January 1200 – 22 September 1253) was a Japanese Zen Buddhist teacher born in Kyōto, and the founder of the Sōtō school of Zen in Japan after travelling to China and training under the Chinese Caodong lineage there. Dōgen is known for his extensive writing including the Treasury of the Eye of the True Dharma or Shōbōgenzō, a collection of ninety-five fascicles concerning Buddhist practice and enlightenment.

Zen (2009) Part 1

Zen – Movie about Dogen – DharmaflixWiki

….Banmei Takahashi’s “Zen” is that rare serious film about this form of Buddhism, which has had a huge cultural influence but is little understood — let alone practiced — by ordinary Japanese. Perhaps it’s a sign that, after decades of a single-minded focus on materialism, the culture is returning to its spiritual roots; or that one Baby Boomer director (Takahashi is 60) is getting religious in his old age.

Zen (2009) Part 2

Zen Beginner: Zen Movie Review: Zen

…Despite some moments of CG silliness the movie does manage to provide good dramatic pacing considering the amount to time in the movie that’s dedicated to Zazen (admittedly not the most compelling thing to watch), the major events of Dogen’s life are all covered, up to his death. The movie portrays him dying in Zazen as the monks continue to sit the rest of the period out of dedication to his practice. This portrayal diverges from the historical account but it’s emblematic of the way a Zen master is supposed to die: either standing or sitting in perfect samadhi.

Overall Zen is entertaining and contains enough of a historical outline of Dogen’s life that it’s a worthwhile movie. I give it four out of five enso’s.

Shōbōgenzō

(lit. “Treasury of the True Dharma Eye”) The term Shōbōgenzō has three main usages in Buddhism: (1) It can refer to the essence of the Buddha’s realization and teaching, that is, to the Buddha Dharma itself, as viewed from the perspective of Mahayana Buddhism, (2) it is the title of a koan collection with commentaries by Dahui Zonggao, and (3) it is used in the title of two works by Dogen Kigen…

If you do not realize the fruit at this moment, when will you realize it?

If you do not cut off delusion at this moment, when will you cut off delusion?

If you do not become a buddha at this moment, when will you?

If you do not sit as a buddha at this moment, when will you practice as an active buddha

Diligently examine this in detail…

Genjo Koan is perhaps the best known section of Eihei Dogen’s masterwork, Shobogenzo (Treasury of the True Dharma Eye).

Genjo Koan

first verse –

“As all things are buddha-dharma, there is delusion and realization, practice, and birth and death, and there are buddhas and sentient beings.

As the myriad things are without an abiding self, there is no delusion, no realization, no buddha, no sentient being, no birth and death.

The buddha way is, basically, leaping clear of the many and the one; thus there are birth and death, delusion and realization, sentient beings and buddhas.

Yet in attachment blossoms fall, and in aversion weeds spread.”

Bhumisparsha Mudrā

Bhumisparsha Mudrā | photo of statue, June 23, 2011

Siddhartha resisted every temptation Mara could devise. The lord of desire had one final test. He demanded to know who would testify that Siddhartha was worthy of attaining ultimate wisdom. And his demon army rose up to support him. Siddhartha said nothing. He reached down and touched the ground, and the earth shuddered. Mara’s demons fled.

This gesture calls upon the earth to witness Shakyamuni Buddha’s enlightenment at Bodh Gaya. The right hand reaches toward the ground, palm inward.

मुद्रा
A mudrā (Sanskrit: मुद्रा “seal”, “mark”, or “gesture”) is a symbolic or ritual gesture in Hinduism and Buddhism. While some mudrās involve the entire body, most are performed with the hands and fingers. A mudrā is a spiritual gesture and an energetic seal of authenticity employed in the iconography and spiritual practice of Indian religions and traditions of Dharma and Taoism.

Dalai Lama – Kalachakra Preliminary Teachings

Dalai Lama audio and video | The Office of His Holiness The Dalai Lama: “Kalachakra Preliminary Teachings”

Day one of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s three day teaching on Gyalsey Thokme Sangpo’s “37 Practices of A Boddhisattva (laklen sodunma)” and Kamalashila’s “Stages of Meditation – Middle Volume (gomrim barpa)” given on July 9-11, 2011, that were preliminary teachings to the Kalachakra Empowerment. (www.dalailama.com)

Kalachakra

कालचक्र

Kalachakra (Sanskrit: कालचक्र; IAST: Kālacakra) is a Sanskrit term used in Tantric Buddhism that literally means “time-wheel” or “time-cycles.” The spelling Kalacakra is also correct.

Kalachakra refers both to a Tantric deity (Tib. yidam) of Vajrayana Buddhism and to the philosophies and meditation practices contained within the Kalachakra Tantra and its many commentaries. The Kalachakra Tantra is more properly called the Kalachakra Laghutantra, and is said to be an abridged form of an original text, the Kalachakra Mulatantra which is no longer extant. Some Buddhist masters assert that Kalachakra is the most advanced form of Vajrayana practice; it certainly is one of the most complex systems within tantric Buddhism.

The Kalachakra tradition revolves around the concept of time (kāla) and cycles (chakra): from the cycles of the planets, to the cycles of human breathing, it teaches the practice of working with the most subtle energies within one’s body on the path to enlightenment.

The Kalachakra deity represents a Buddha and thus omniscience. Since Kalachakra is time and everything is under the influence of time, Kalachakra knows all. Whereas Kalachakri or Kalichakra, his spiritual consort and complement, is aware of everything that is timeless, untimebound or out of the realm of time. In Yab-yum, they are temporality and atemporality conjoined. Similarly, the wheel is without beginning or end.

Salvia divinorum

Salvia divinorum (also known as Diviner’s Sage, Ska María Pastora, Seer’s Sage, and by its genus name Salvia) is a psychoactive plant which can induce dissociative effects and is a potent producer of “visions” and other hallucinatory experiences.

Salvia divinorum has a long and continuous tradition of religious use by Mazatec shamans, who use it to facilitate visionary states of consciousness during spiritual healing sessions. Most of the plant’s local common names allude to the Mazatec belief that the plant is an incarnation of the Virgin Mary, with its ritual use also invoking that relationship. Its active psychoactive constituent is a structurally unique diterpenoid called salvinorin A, a potent κ-opioid and D2 receptor agonist. Salvia divinorum is generally understood to be of low toxicity (high LD50) and low addictive potential; as a κ-opioid agonist.

The Salvia divinorum User’s Guide says that while the effects of salvia are generally quite different from those of alcohol, like alcohol, it impairs coordination. It also emphasizes that salvia is not a ‘party drug.’

Salvia is not ‘fun’ in the way that alcohol or cannabis can be. If you try to party with salvia you probably will not have a good experience. Salvia is a consciousness-changing herb that can be used in a vision quest, or in a healing ritual. In the right setting, salvia makes it possible to see visions. It is an herb with a long tradition of sacred use. It is useful for deep meditation. It is best taken in a quiet, nearly dark room; either alone, or with one or two good friends present.

Truth

La Vérité (“Truth”)
by Jules Joseph Lefebvre 1870

The ancient Greek origins of the words “true” and “truth” have some consistent definitions throughout great spans of history that were often associated with topics of logic, geometry, mathematics, deduction, induction, and natural philosophy.

Socrates’, Plato’s and Aristotle’s ideas about truth are commonly seen as consistent with correspondence theory. In his Metaphysics, Aristotle stated:

To say of what is that it is not,

or of what is not that it is, is false,

while to say of what is that it is,

and of what is not that it is not, is true.

“Narcotics have been systematically scapegoated and demonized. The idea that anyone can use drugs and escape a horrible fate is an anathema to these idiots. I predict that in the near future right-wingers will use drug hysteria as a pretext to set up an international police apparatus.”

William S. Burroughs
(1914 – 1997)

“All penalties for drug users should be dropped. Making drug abuse a crime is useless and even dangerous. Every year we seize more and more drugs but the quantity available still increases. Police are losing the drug battle worldwide”

Everything Is A Miracle

There are only two ways to live your life.

One is as though nothing is a miracle.

The Future Is Now

Some people think there is a future

some people think there is a past

they are wrong

there is no “past”

there is no “future”

there is only the eternal NOW!!!!!

Coherent curriculum

No other country, with a history of successful education, applies economic principles of competition and incentives to the teaching profession. It’s too narrow-focused. There are so many other variables to consider. Community, family, individual differences. Schools are not factories. No other nation, with a successful school system, abandons courses in cultural subjects, like music and foreign languages, to focus only on basic skills and testing. Schools work best when teachers collaborate to help students, not when they compete for higher scores and bonuses. Otherwise, the lesson we’re teaching our children is: how best to be nothing more than a fucking commodity.

In education, collaboration is not socialism !!
